For the love of postcards

Following on from yesterday’s post about the launch of the new Tumblr, and riding the short wave of excitement that came from exploring all the new features, I spent a couple of hours last night, putting together a new project that I want to outline here.

The project is called ‘Cardinal Point‘. It’s about found postcards, and it’s about places. I set up a simple tumble log with the idea of posting all the postcards I pick up on my travels and I invite readers of Cardinal Point to send me their postcards for publication on Cardinal Point too. See some examples of current postcards below.

The idea came from a phase I went through as a child. I used to collect postcards and by the age of 15 I had accumulated so many that the bulk of them went into storage in our cellar. Unfortunately as time went by and my parents moved to a new place and I moved out, the postcards got lost in the midst of things. But the other day I was searching through some files at home, and I suddenly realised that without any sort of conscious decision, I had begun accumulating postcards again.

So I decided that it might be fun to start scanning all the postcards I have in my possession (currently around 60) and posting them online. That way I can build a ‘virtual’ archive that won’t take up alot of room at home. It’s also the chance to share these amazing images with other people. Hopefully if there’s enough enthusiasm about the project, other people will start sending there’s in too.

I also set up a map through flagr that pinpoints the location of where each postcard was found. And I’ve also implemented disqus into the tumble log to allow for visitor comments and feedback. It’s going to be interesting to see whether this project garners any attention. For the moment I’m just working through my stock of postcards at home. By the time I reach the end of that I’ll have already found new cards around town and hopefully I’ll have some user submitted cards too.

So go and take a look at the Cardinal Point Project and please spread the word and if you feel particularly daring why not send me a postcard!
